Welcome to Lakeland Finland

Date and Venue

The 3rd Nordic Conference in Epidemiology will be held on June 17-19, 2004, at Mediteknia. The venue is situated in a beautiful waterside area, overlooking the Savilahti Bay, on the campus of the University of Kuopio.

Kuopio is a city of 86 000 inhabitants, situated in the heart of Lakeland Finland and surrounded by Lake Kallavesi. The distance from Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is 400 km or 45 minutes by air.

Summer is the most beautiful season in this region and a time for many cultural events in Kuopio. The International Kuopio Dance Festival will be in parallel with the conference.

Travel Information

By plane
Kuopio Airport is connected with Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport with 4 to 8 daily departures by Finnair. The Finnair bus connection from the airport to the center of Kuopio is operated before and after every Finnair flight. The bus travels via the Market Place, Sokos Hotel Puijonsarvi and Scandic Hotel Kuopio. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes and costs 5,50 € (October 2003 prices). Taxi from the airport to the center is about 25€.

By train
From Helsinki or Turku to Kuopio by train takes 5 to 6 hours. There are 7-8 daily departures. Railway station is located in the center of the town.

By ferry to Helsinki or Turku
From Stockholm you can also travel by ferry to Turku or Helsinki and take a train to Kuopio. The distance between Turku and Kuopio is 450 km. There is a lot of ferry traffic between Tallinn and Helsinki. This is one possibility to travel to Finland from Baltic countries.

Social Programme


All social programmes are included in the registration fee of all participants excluding the students' fee.

Reception at the Kuopio Town Hall, June 17, 2004 at 18.30.
Get-together party in the elegant Kuopio Town Hall. Hosted by the Mayor of Kuopio.

Fun run, Friday June 18, 2004 at 6.30.
Nice walk or jog around the beautiful Väinölänniemi Park, Rauhalahti Area or around the Sammakkolampi pond (near Hotel Savonia).

Cruise on Lake Kallavesi and dinner at the Lumberjacks' Lodge, June 18, 2004 starting at 19.00.
We will sail to a traditional Lumberjacks' Lodge on an old lake boat and enjoy the fabulous scenery of Lake Kallavesi. During the cruise we will listen to traditional accordion music. At the Lumberjacks' Lodge we will enjoy buffet dinner and dance music. For ultimate relaxation you can take an authentic Finnish smoke sauna bath in the world's largest smoke sauna with a refreshing dip into one of the 188 000 Finnish lakes.
